Prednisone

Product Description: This is a steroid (corticosteroid) anti-inflammatory and general pain reliever.

Indications for Use: Use in situations where inflammation or pain is a problem. These situations include musculoskeletal problems, allergy problems, skin diseases (autoimmune disease), eye and ear problems, and many other diseases and syndromes.

Dosage and Administration: The dose of prednisone varies with the severity and type of disease being treated and can be very different from patient to patient. The range of treatment doses goes from 0.25 mg/lb to 2 mg/lb. The average dose is 5 mg per every 10 lbs. of body weight. This dose is usually given as an oral tablet.

Duration of Treatment: Continue the treatment for as long as symptoms persist. High doses and treatment for prolonged periods of time should be avoided, if possible (see precautions).

Packaging: This product comes in containers of 5 and 20 mg tablets and in a 1 mg/ml oral liquid.

Precautions and Side Effects: Because all steroids cause suppression of the immune system, they should be used with caution if a general bacterial or viral infection is known or suspected. Steroids can also have many undesirable side effects. These side effects include the excessive need to drink water and urinate, appetite changes, behavior or personality changes, and liver irritation. Because of these side effects, the main goal with corticosteroid therapy is to control the condition adequately on the lowest possible drug dose. Usually, the right dose given orally, every other day, is both effective and minimizes undesirable side effects. Steroids can also cause intestinal, stomach, and kidney damage. If bloody feces or urine is noted, discontinue use and consider anti-ulcer treatment. Do not use in conjunction with other steroids unless directed by a veterinarian.
