Product Description:
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring substance normally produced by the pituitary gland.Indications for Use: This drug is used to induce labor and speed up labor (see precautions). It will also help contract the uterus after giving birth, when uterine infections, retained placentas, or uterine prolapses are a problem.
Not approved for use in goats. Refer to extra-label drug use.
Dosage and Administration: For uterus contraction and to aid in labor in sheep, a dose of 1.5-2.5 mLs (30-50 U.S.P. units) intramuscularly (IM), intravenously (IV), or subcutaneously (SQ) is recommended. A dose of 0.5-1.0 mL (10-20 U.S.P. units) intramuscularly (IM) is recommended in goats.
Packaging: This product comes in 100 mL bottles. Each mL contains 20 U.S.P. units.
Precautions and Side Effects: Do not give oxytocin to the mother if the fetus is in an abnormal position or presentation (breech, legs retained, head back, etc.). Once the problem has been corrected, oxytocin can be administered. Do not give to induce or speed up labor until the cervix is completely dilated.
Storage: Depending on the product, refrigeration and protection from freezing are required.
Milk Withholding: None when used in ewes.
Meat Withholding: None when used in ewes.
