Product Description:
This is an antibiotic effective against gram positive bacteria (Pasteurella, Streptococcus spp., and Staphylococcus spp.).Indications for Use: It can be used in the treatment of general bacterial infections, pneumonia, and gangrenous mastitis.
Not approved for use in goats. Refer to extra-label drug use.
Dosage and Administration: The label recommends giving 3,000 IU per pound, deep intramuscularly (IM), once or twice daily, using a 16-18 gauge, one and one-half inch needle. To be effective, most veterinarians recommend giving 9,000-20,000 IU per pound of body weight in an extra label manner. This means that a 100 lb animal should receive about 3-7 mLs. Inject no more than 10-15 mL per injection site. Shake bottle well before use.
Duration of Treatment: A minimum of 2-3 days of treatment may be necessary for most problems. Treatment should not exceed 4 consecutive days.
Packaging: This product comes in 100 and 250 mL bottles. Each mL contains 300,000 IU of penicillin G procaine.
Precautions and Side Effects: The injection should be given deep into muscle tissue. Careful attention should be given to ensure the needle is not in a blood vessel. See page C275 for administration techniques. Allergic reactions are very possible when using this drug. Two signs of problems are hives and breathing difficulty. If either of these signs occur, epinephrine should be given immediately at a dose of 1 mL per 100 lbs., injected IM or SQ. See page I 205. Once an animal has had a reaction to penicillin, DO NOT ADMINISTER penicillin or ampicillin again for any reason.
Storage: This product must be kept refrigerated at all times.
