Oxytetracycline (LA-200, Oxy-200, etc.)


Product Description: This is an antibiotic effective against some gram positive and some gram negative bacteria (Pasteurella, E. coli, Actinobacillus, Streptococcus spp., and Staphylococcus spp.).

Indications for Use: Use for general bacterial infections, pneumonia (shipping fever), diarrhea, footrot, uterine infections, and pinkeye.

* Over the years, many organisms have become resistant to oxytetracycline; therefore, treatment of the above diseases with oxytetracycline should be based on individual experience and/or culture and sensitivity.

The injectable forms of oxytetracycline are not approved for use in sheep and goats. Refer to extra-label drug use.

Dosage and Administration: A dose of 9 mg/lb of body weight should be given intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SQ) every 48 hours. This means that 4.5 mLs per 100 lbs. should be given.

Duration of Treatment: Treatment should be continued at least 2-3 days after symptoms resolve. Some problems may take 3-5 days to show improvement.

Packaging: This product comes in 100, 250, and 500 mL bottles. Each mL contains 200 mg of oxytetracycline.

Precautions and Side Effects: Do not give in conjunction with penicillins. Allergic reactions and local tissue reactions are possible. If allergic reactions occur, discontinue use and administer epinephrine at 1 mL per 100 lbs.

Storage: This drug does not need to be refrigerated.

Milk Withholding: Not established for dairy animals. Some reports indicate an "unofficial" withdrawal of 6 days.

Meat Withholding: Not established in sheep and goats. Some reports indicate an "unofficial" withdrawal of 28 days.
