Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid)

Product Description: This is an anti-inflammatory and general pain reliever.

Indications for Use: Use in situations where pain relief or fever reduction is needed (infection, muscle damage, arthritis, and joint pain).

Dosage and Administration:

Sheep: Give 1/2 to 1 (60 grain) bolus orally, once to twice a day. The powdered form of aspirin should be administered at 1-3 grams per animal per day. (One grain equals approximately 60 mg, so a 60 grain bolus equals 3,600 mg or 3.6 grams.)

Goats: To be effective, some veterinarians recommend giving 45 mg/pound of body weight twice a day in an extra label manner.

Many of the products are not approved for use in sheep and goats. Refer to extra-label drug use.

Duration of Treatment: Continue the treatment for as long as symptoms persist, but do not exceed 3 consecutive days of treatment (see precautions).

Packaging: Aspirin comes in containers of 60 and 240 grain boluses. It also comes as a powder form.

Precautions and Side Effects: Aspirin can cause stomach and intestinal irritation and ulceration. Be cautious regarding duration of treatment and doses. If signs of abdominal pain occur, or if there is blood or dark, tar-like material in the feces, discontinue aspirin and all anti-inflammatory agents immediately.

Consider anti-ulcer (Magnalax, etc.) treatment if the above signs exist.
