Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)

Product Description: Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring dietary sulfur that is a derivative of DMSO. MSM is naturally present in plants and animal tissues including milk, fruits, vegetables, and grains. However, it is easily lost when fresh feed is processed and/or stored. Unlike DMSO, it does not have an unpleasant odor.

Indications for Use: The most common use of MSM in horses is for joint and pain relief. In these situations it acts as an anti-inflammatory. Other studies claim that it can be used for tendon/ligament problems, parasite infections, to reduce allergic reactions, and for stomach or intestine upset. Use of this product for these later situations should be done with skepticism until additional equine research has been completed.

Dosage and Administration: The dose of MSM is 8,000-12,000 mg per day. This means that a 1,000 lb. horse should be fed 2-3 blue (5cc) scoops daily of the MSM Crystals manufactured by Vitality Systems. One blue 5 cc scoop is 4,000 mg, and the scoop is provided. Every manufacturer may have different products and recommendations, so read label directions carefully.

Packaging: This supplement is available as an individual ingredient or in combination with other ingredients. It comes as a pellet, crystal or powder substance.

Precautions and Side Effects: MSM is generally considered safe with few side effects. This product is for animal use only.
