Bute (Phenylbutazone)


Product Description: This is a anti-inflammatory and general pain reliever.

Indications for Use: Bute can be used in situations where pain relief or fever reduction is needed (infection, muscle damage, arthritis, and joint pain).

Dosage and Administration: An initial dose of 2 grams per 1000 lbs. of body weight, twice a day, should be given. After this initial dose, one gram morning and evening can be administered. The average 1100 lb. horse should receive one of the following: Initially give 2 tablets, 2 lines on a paste syringe, or 10 mL, IV, twice a day. After the 1st doses are given, the horse can then be given either 1 tablet, 1 line on the syringe, or 5 mL, IV, twice a day as needed. (See precautions).

* IV injections of bute must be given in the vein. If any of the injection goes outside of the vein, severe tissue damage can result.

Duration of Treatment: Continue treatment for as long as symptoms persist. If, after 5 days of treatment, there are no signs of improvement, a re-evaluation of the diagnosis and treatment should be made.

Packaging: This product comes in a 100 tablet container, a paste syringe, or 100 mL bottles. Each tablet is 1 gram, every line on the paste syringe equals 1 gram, and each mL contains 200 mg of bute.

Precautions and Side Effects: Bute can cause stomach and intestinal irritation and ulceration. Be cautious regarding duration of treatment and doses. If signs of abdominal pain, blood or dark, tar-like material in the manure are observed, discontinue bute and all anti-inflammatory drugs immediately.

Storage and Shelf Life: Store in a cool, dry place between 46-59°F. or refrigerate.

Meat Withholding: Do not use in horses intended for food.
